Best Software for File Recovery After Reformat

Reformatting of hard drives is basically performed to change the file system. In a computer (and other storage device) file system is the way to organize the information about the location of each stored file and available free space. The most commonly used file systems are FAT and NTFS. NTFS is more reliable and secure than the FAT fle system. It provides some advanced features that are not available in any version of FAT. NTFS uses standard transaction logging and recovery techniques to guarantee volume consistency, it uses checkpoint and log file information to restore the consistency. It also provides compression, disk quotas, and encryption.

Steps to convert a FAT volume to NTFS:

  1. Click Start- Programs- Accessories and then click on Command Prompt.
  2. Type the following at the command prompt
convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs  (where drive letter is the drive that you want to convert)
  3. Write the type of the file system (i.e. FAT) and enter the current volume label for drive (drive letter)
  4. Once the conversion to NTFS is complete, you will receive ‘Conversion complete’ message, now quit the command prompt.

The incomplete reformatting process could result in data loss. During the reformatting process you will get error messages when any file on the drive is being used and you are interrupted. The power surge problem and abrupt shutting down the system may also interrupt the reformatting process, which finally lead to data loss.
