There are many versions of Windows operating System like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows 95, Windows 98 etc. Windows 95 and Windows 98 supports FAT-16 or FAT-32 (File Allocation Table) file system. The Operating Systems that are released prior to Windows 95 support only FAT-16 file system. If partition size is greater than 2GB (Giga bytes), FAT-32 file system is used instead of FAT-16. Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT and above version of Windows Operating Systems supports both FAT and NTFS (New Technology File System) file systems. FAT-32 file system uses 32 bits to allocate clusters. FAT-32 file system limits the size of FAT-32 volume to 32 GB because files of larger size may become inefficient. FAT maintains an entry for each cluster, which indicates that whether the cluster is bad, whether it contains a file or not. NTFS file system uses different approach to organize files. NTFS partition is divided into four sectors- they are Partition Boot sector, Master File Table (MFT), File system Data and a backup copy of the Master File Table. In MFT, information about every file and directories that are present in NTFS volume is stored. Whenever data is deleted from the hard drives, the content will remain in the same location but pointer to those particular files will get deleted.
There are many scenarios in which files will get deleted from Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
Before formatting, reformatting, partitioning, repartitioning drive, it is better to make sure whether you have taken backup of all important files or not. Take a backup of all-important files into CD, DVD or external hard drive. One more precautionary measure that you must take is defragmentation of data. Defragmentation means reorganizing the data stored on the hard drive in a continuous fashion. If you organize the data in continuous fashion, then the chances of occurrences of data loss decreases. If you have formatted your hard drive without taking a backup then there is no need to worry. File Recovery Software can recover data from formatted, reformatted, partitioned, repartitioned hard drive. The software has the capacity to recover deleted files from FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, ExFAT partitions/drives. The software can recover data from RAID0, RAID1, and RAID5 partitions, which have been formatted. The software can also recover files from emptied Recycle Bin on Windows.
